Here’s a sample of what Dr. Hockey can address:
Dr Hockey: I have been advised differently by so many people on what to do this summer. I am confused. I am on a budget and my son who is 14 has been told to do everything from take the summer off to play on travel teams and hire a personal trainer. I do not want my son to fall behind but cannot afford another big bill? What do I do??
Thanks,
Sleepless Mom
Dear Sleepless Mom,
Very tough decision! First of all, there are excellent camps at most rinks here in Colorado. The coaching here is as good as anywhere. Based on a tight budget, I would first talk to your son and make sure he wants to play hockey this summer. Second, talk to his past coach to see what kind of camp will be best for him (i.e. skating-stick handling etc.) In other words, what should he work on? I would definitely have him play some other sport. Time away from hockey is not time lost.
Hockey players are the most complete athletes and being a good athlete will make him a better hockey player. I’ve noticed in the past several years that roller hockey in the summer has helped kids become better stick handlers. It is inexpensive and a good cross training sport. Camps for his age should be productive and fun...in a few years they will be necessary for him to be exposed if he excels at the game. Keep it fun for now and expect to spend more money as he moves on. As for sleep, you are not alone!
Dear Dr Hockey: My son has been invited to try out for a few junior teams. He gets letters that start out "Dear hockey player"…are these real?
Hockey Dad
Dear Hockey Dad: They are invitations to hockey camps, plain and simple. They are fundraisers. When they want him you will know it! Now with that said, if he is a top player and he is on his last chance (18-year-old or so) and he wants to go --send him. If he wants it bad enough give him a last shot--I am sure you have mortgaged your house by now to pay for all those years so what’s another $300 at this point? You never know. I know a boy who is playing for the Lincoln Stars (USHL) and he walked on last year. It is rare but at the least he will get in a few good skates with good players. Good luck!
